Land Bureau Drafts Rules to Prevent Methane Leaks

Proposal would require monthly leak detection for oil and gas drilling.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposed rules this week to curb methane gas leaks from oil and gas wells on public lands. Methane is a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide, and nearly a tenth of oil and natural gas production in the United States takes place on public lands.

The proposed rule matches rules recently proposed for private lands, imposing monthly limits on methane flares and requiring oil and gas companies to participate in lead detection programs for their workers. Companies will also be required to submit their methods for trapping methane gas for use in other industrial applications.

“This draft rule is a common-sense, environmentally responsible solution as we address the damage that wasted natural gas causes,” BLM Director Tracy Stone-Manning stated.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Stone-Manning as she heads the Bureau of Land Management.
  • For Secretary Deb Haaland to seek God’s direction as she oversees efforts to limit methane emissions.
